Avraham Moshe

My name is Avraham Moshe, I am a research PhD student in the Department of Middle Eastern Studies and Islamic Studies in Haifa university. These days, I am Working on my dissertation, supervised by Professor Fruma Zachs. I have completed my undergraduate and graduate studies in Haifa University. I hold a B.A from the department of Arabic Language and Literature and the department of Middle Eastern Studies and Islamic Studies, from which I hold an M.A. too. My M.A. thesis was supervised by Professor Uri M. Kupferschmidt and focused on the study of the Udaba; the group of scholars, which contributed to the cultural blooming in Syria-Lebanon and Egypt during the 19th century, known as the Nahda. This research was conducted through the prism of social history. The dissertation that I am writing these days revolves around the Syrian civil war, during the years 2011-2017. It examines the socials, gender-oriented and political processes that are being reflected through women’s writing and testimonies. The study consequently offers new perspective of the civil war through Syrian women’s eyes. This research will show that women were involved in social and political activities throughout the civil war, despite the strengthening of the militant masculine discourse, that tried to push women aside. Furthermore, this research will introduce the internal discourse in Syrian society along with its different aspects, the hegemonic and the marginal ones. It will provide a glimpse into the isolated Syrian society and expend the boundaries of the historical research.
